Employee FAQs
What is OCA?
Occupational Chaplains of America (OCA) provides trusted, confidential support to employees and their families—right at work. Our chaplains offer encouragement, perspective, and a safe space to talk about whatever you’re facing, from stress to family struggles.
Are conversations confidential?
Yes, conversations with your chaplain are confidential.
Is this religious?
No. Our chaplains are neutral. We do not preach, proselytize, or push beliefs. You decide the type and level of care and support you need. You decide if conversations include faith or not.
Do I have to talk to the chaplain?
You choose how—and if—you want to engage. Our chaplains visit regularly so you can get to know them. If and when you want to connect, we are available.
What can I talk about with a chaplain?
Anything that’s on your mind. Common topics include mental health, anxiety, or emotional health. Grief, stress, trauma, addictions or burnout. Relational struggles, marriage, or divorce. Family caregiving responsibilities or you just may need to vent, or simply need someone to listen.
Where do I find the chaplain?
You’ll see your chaplain during regular workplace visits. You can also meet off-site for coffee, or connect by phone, text, email, or Zoom.
How do I address the chaplain?
Just use their name. “Chaplain” describes their role, but you don’t need to be formal. A simple “Hi [First Name]” is always welcome. We are approachable, familiar, friendly faces—not titles or uniforms.
Can my family use this service, too?
Yes. OCA chaplains provide confidential support not only for employees but also their immediate adult family members, offering care for households as a whole.
What if I’m not sure what to say?
That’s okay. You don’t have to prepare anything. Chaplains are trained to listen first and walk beside you at your pace.
Can you tell a chaplain anything?
Yes. You can share personal concerns freely. The only exceptions are mandated reporting situations (like imminent harm or abuse). Otherwise, your conversation stays private.
Business Leader & HR FAQs
What is an occupational chaplain?
An occupational chaplain is a neutral, trusted friend. We are trained, trauma-informed professionals who provide confidential, person-led support to employees and their families. OCA chaplains visit workplaces regularly, offering encouragement and perspective through consistent, relationship-based care.
How does this help my business?
Chaplains reduce the strain on leadership while working closely with HR by supporting employees through personal challenges that otherwise spill into work. Leaders find they have more time to lead, knowing employees' are still being cared for. Other benefits may include higher morale, stronger loyalty, fewer conflicts, and lower turnover.
How does chaplaincy compare to an EAP?
OCA offers a proactive, onsite, relationship-based alternative to traditional Employee Assistance Programs. We build trust through weekly visits and natural presence in the workplace, before the crisis. When personal struggles arise, your people already have someone they know and trust for immediate care and support. We are available 24/7 and will respond within minutes in emergency situations. The businesses we serve already have a traditional EAP, which we appreciate and when needed, refer to. Employee care is crucial and is a team effort!
Are chaplains mandated reporters?
Yes. Chaplains are mandated reporters.
How do you introduce chaplains to my team?
Leadership schedules a staff meeting to introduce OCA employee support services. Our chaplain will explain how the service works allowing time for a Q&A session. This helps employees feel comfortable before the first visit. When our chaplain returns for weekly visits, your team members already know who we are and why we’re here.
How often do chaplains visit?
OCA chaplains visit weekly, becoming familiar faces in the natural rhythm of your workplace. This consistency builds trust and encourages real engagement.
Do the same chaplains visit each time?
Yes. Consistency matters. Your business is assigned one or more regular chaplains who become part of your team’s fabric, not strangers who rotate in and out.
Who can use chaplain services?
Employees at every level, their immediate family members, including owners and HR leaders. Chaplains are a resource for the whole team, not just frontline staff.
How do chaplains support remote or hybrid employees?
Along with in-person visits, OCA chaplains are available by phone, text, email, Zoom, and 24/7 crisis response. This ensures care is accessible for remote, hybrid, or off-site staff.
What are the requirements of a chaplain?
OCA chaplains are certified in occupational chaplaincy, trauma-informed support, and responsive communication. Each chaplain is carefully matched for cultural fit and professionalism.
What makes a great chaplain?
A great chaplain is approachable, compassionate, consistent, and confidential. They listen first, respect all backgrounds providing care and support as needed.
How much does it cost?
